1. How does this pup come into the world?

This puppy was extremely quiet at birth. He was also still for a few moments. When placed near mom for cleaning, he continued to remain quiet and still. He went to food when all the commotion was over. This puppy receives a score of 10 for this section.

This puppy is generally quiet. He does not grunt or make sounds when eating. When he finds himself away from mom, he does grunt some until he finds her. This puppy receives a score of 8 for this section.

3. What is the energy level of this pup?

This puppy is extremely calm. He is rarely seen moving about and generally stays where he eats. He does tend to struggle a bit when mom moves him for cleaning. He stiffens which causes him to roll a bit and makes it harder to mom to clean him. But, mom is consistent and gets the job done. This puppy receives a score of 7 for this section.

4. What is the reaction of this pup to the first medical examination?

This puppy immediately began to squirm and struggle, with mild grunting. He pumped his legs and his face changed from loose to flexed or stretched. He resisted the hand in the mouth by moving his head around and pumping his legs. This puppy receives a score of 5 for this section.

5. What is the reaction of this pup when turned over on its back?

This puppy immediately began to increase the volume of his grunting noises. He also continued to flail his legs and struggle against the turn and hold. He did not submit. This puppy receives a score of 4 for this section.

This puppy began moving his head from one side to the other, then began moving in a straight direction toward mom and littermates. He grunted just a bit, but not nearly as much as on some of the other sections of this test. This puppy receives a score of 8 for this section.

This puppy immediately began to move forward and then around in a circle. He grunted softly at the touch. This puppy receives a score of 6 for this section.

This puppy was loose, not fidgety, and did not make a sound. This puppy receives a score of 9 for this section.

  1. Turn the pup over on its back securely supported.

This puppy was quiet and still. He did not move his legs, but remained in the same position for the duration of the hold. This puppy receives a score of 8 for this section.

5. Place the pup in a high-sided wicker basket by itself. How does this pup act when separated from littermates?

This puppy moved back in the direction of the pack, but was quiet. He was not quick, but seemed determined and methodical about his movements. This puppy receives a score of 6 for this section.

  1. Replace the pup back near its siblings, but not with them.  How does the pup react?

This puppy stayed to sniff the handler's foot and then returned to the pile of puppies without much delay. He was quiet and self-assured without an elevated heartbeat or stiffness. This puppy receives a score of 9 for this section.
