6. What is the reaction of this pup when placed back with its mother?
This puppy lay still for fifteen seconds without movement. I initially thought perhaps he was falling asleep, but he was awake. After his initial stillness period, he began grunting softly and moving his head slightly in slow movements back and forth from side to side, however, he did not move his body or propel himself forward or around in circles. He lay still and after another bit of time, he began to cry out more loudly, but like green often does. The handler eventually moved him just a bit forward so that he could feel mom's toes, but even then he continued to grunt and cry. However, at that point he did begin to move his head from side to side and then propel himself forward and around to the right slightly away from mom. It was at this point that mom nudged him and he finally moved toward her. This puppy receives a score of 4 for this section.

  1. Pick up the pup from its den using your whole hand to simulate mother dog's mouth.

This puppy pumped his feet a few times in a semi-relaxed fashion, then yawned and softly grunted. He then relaxed about 5 seconds into the lift with a sigh. This puppy receives a score of 8 for this section.

  1. Turn the pup over on its back securely supported.

This puppy was loose, still and quiet, although he yawned once. This puppy receives a score of 9 for the turn.

5. Place the pup in a high-sided wicker basket by itself. How does this pup act when separated from littermates?

This puppy lie still for 4 seconds then cautiously rose and began moving his head back and forth. After another few seconds, he then began to softly grunt as he moved slowly about the bottom of the basket. This pup receives a score of 8 for this section.

  1. Replace the pup back near its siblings, but not with them.  How does the pup react?

This puppy was silent during this section. He first looked around cautiously, then began to waddle forward. At the edge of the new towel, he stopped walking and stretched out his head to sniff in front of him. He did not continue in that direction toward the pack, but then turned, as if unsure, around in a circle. Then, he went back to his original spot where he had stopped and then walked back to the pack. This puppy receives a score of 9 for this section.

This puppy receives an overall score of 8.17 for this test.
