July 7, 2017 - Puppies born today severely dehydrated and glucose deficient due to Tina's intestinal blockage.
July 10, 2017 - Puppies brought to vet for hydration and glucose support. The puppies will not be on lactated ringers (subcutaneous fluids) and catheter feeding to get their glucose content up. Puppies are under incubation at 85 to 90 degrees. Pups are still in critical condition at this time.
July 9, 2017 - Puppies nursed on Tina for 2 days before Tina went into surgery to release the intestinal blockage from swallowing a piece of rope toy and she passed on the table. The puppies remaining will be raised without their mother from this point forward. We are very sad at Tina's loss. The puppies remain severly dehydrated and glucose deficient despite efforts to replace their mother's milk consumption. MaryAnn, seems to have the dry heaves and is groaning. We anticipate that she may also have the same tummy troubles that her sister has shown, although she does not show diarrhea at this time. She also continues to eat normally. Puppies continue to be incubated at 79 to 81 degrees. Puppies have begun Panacur at .25 ml once a day in case the runny stools is parasite related. They will be on this for three days.
July 19, 2017 - All of the puppies have rallied and we no longer see diarrhea and all stools are normal. Each puppy is eating very well and sleeping a lot. They all enjoy snuggling when they are done eating and love to have their faces carressed. August 03, 2017 - The puppies have been eating real food for four days now. They are eating raw ground beef and chicken. Today is the first day the puppies ate their food without formula mixed into it. They have begun to drink water on their own and we have now placed a water bowl in with them to drink as they are thirsty. The puppies are also pottying on their own now. They receive baths every other day, which they have grown to enjoy. Each puppy receives individual snuggle time after their bath and after feeding.
August 05, 2017 - Without their mother's immunity, these puppies are much more susceptible to acquiring bacteria and virus bugs that life brings with it. They must use their own immunity to fight off such things, rather than rely on their mother to gift it to them. Today, the puppies showed some diarrhea symptoms and tummy troubles. MaryAnn, in particular, was bloated and achy in her tummy. Eating solid food slowed for the puppies and MaryAnn only wanted milk replacer, which we obliged. Because of the diarrhea, we placed the puppies back on Clavomox. They will receive 25cc twice a day for a week. The puppies are eating and drinking though, so no big concerns at this time.
August 06, 2017 - MaryAnn had constipation for about 24 hours but has now released her bowels and feels so much better. She ate well after that and has rehydrated and is sleeping. The other puppies seem to have come out of it and are on the mend. We will continue to monitor MaryAnn, but she is eating and going potty now, which is a huge relieve. August 10, 2017 - MaryAnn is doing better, but still not using her back legs. She receives physical therapy four times a day to strengthen her rear legs and not lose too much muscle from the weakness and pain in her joints.
September 1, 2017 - Ginger is back to normal in every respect. We are waiting for the lab results to make sure that she is not contagious, but it truly looks like she did not have a virus at all, just a tummy ache that caused her to not drink, which then caused her to become severely dehydrated. She continues to remain isolated at this time but is eating and drinking well and has her energy back.
