About the Litter

THE LEGEND LITTER

Dell × Gamera

American Dirus™ | F3 Generation

Every legend has a beginning.

Some legends are remembered for their courage. Others for their loyalty, their extraordinary devotion, or the way they changed the lives of those who knew them.

And some legends haven't been born yet.

At the Dire Wolf Project™, we believe that the greatest dogs leave a legacy that reaches far beyond their appearance. They become treasured companions, trusted protectors, steadfast friends, and beloved members of the family whose stories are told long after their pawprints have faded.

Our upcoming Legend litter, from Vallecito's Farmer in the Dell and Vallecito's Gamera, represents another chapter in our pursuit of the extraordinary American Dirus™ family companion dog.

Through this breeding, we hope to produce magnificent, large to giant dogs with substantial bone, beautiful silver wolf-sable coats, amber to yellow eyes, and the calm, affectionate temperament that defines our breed.

These puppies will carry generations of carefully selected genetics, along with the promise of becoming something extraordinary in the lives of their future families.

Because every legend begins somewhere.

And these legends will begin here.

APPEARANCE

Dell is a substantial American Dirus™ male standing 27 inches at the shoulders and weighing 100 pounds. Gamera is a giant female standing an impressive 29 inches at the shoulders and weighing 105 pounds.

We anticipate that their puppies will mature into extra-large to giant American Dirus™ dogs, with broad bodies, substantial bone, balanced proportions, and the impressive physical presence we seek in our breeding program.

Our preliminary adult-size predictions are:

  • Giant: Approximately 110–125 pounds and 29–31 inches at the shoulders.
  • Extra-large: Approximately 90–110 pounds and 27–29 inches at the shoulders.

Because Gamera possesses giant stature, we believe some of her offspring may inherit this characteristic. Our ongoing breeding observations suggest that giant size may follow a dominant pattern of inheritance, although the genetic mechanism has not yet been established.

Therefore, these predictions reflect our working breeding theory and accumulated observational data rather than a confirmed single-gene inheritance model.

Ears and Eyes

Gamera has fully erect ears, while Dell has drop ears.

We anticipate that most Legend puppies will develop erect ears, although some may take longer for their ears to rise. Others may develop partially erect ears, or their ears may begin to rise before falling again during development. A few puppies may retain tipped or dropped ears.

Because the genetics responsible for ear carriage have not yet been fully established, we cannot assign reliable statistical probabilities to these possibilities.

Both parents contribute desirable eye coloration. Dell has yellow eyes, while Gamera possesses striking, highly slanted light amber eyes that are nearly yellow.

We anticipate puppies with beautiful amber to yellow eyes, and we hope to see Gamera's especially desirable eye shape carried forward into the next generation.

Coat Characteristics

The Legend puppies are expected to possess beautiful, dense double coats with the natural weather resistance and self-cleaning characteristics we seek in the American Dirus™ breed.

Their coats are expected to be short to medium in length, without furnishings or feathering, and with predominantly straight coat texture.

Dell carries the genetics associated with heavy seasonal shedding, while Gamera carries a lighter-shedding variant. We anticipate natural variation in shedding intensity among their offspring.

Expected Coat-Color Genetics

Based on the parents' Embark DNA results, we anticipate the following statistical inheritance probabilities:

  1. 100% silver wolf sable, inheriting the agouti (aʷ) allele without dominant black.
  2. 50% melanistic black-mask allele, inherited from Dell.
  3. 50% blue-dilution carriers, inheriting Dell's recessive d allele.
  4. 50% liver-dilution carriers, inheriting Gamera's recessive b allele.
  5. 50% piebald white-spotting allele, inherited from Gamera.
  6. 50% roan heterozygotes, inheriting one roan allele and one non-roan allele.
  7. 50% long-coat carriers, inheriting Gamera's recessive long-coat allele.
  8. 0% dominant black wolf sable, recessive black, recessive red, blue dilute, liver dilute, or merle.

These percentages represent expected genetic inheritance based on the parents' DNA results. Individual differences in mask expression, shading, white markings, and other visible characteristics may become apparent as the puppies mature.

We are especially excited about the prospect of an entire litter of beautiful silver wolf-sable American Dirus™ puppies, each with its own distinctive expression, personality, and presence.

After all, even legends from the same family never tell exactly the same story.

INHERITED TEMPERAMENT

The most important characteristics of an American Dirus™ dog cannot be measured with a ruler or captured in a photograph.

They are found in the dog's relationship with its family, its emotional stability, its willingness to cooperate, and the gentle companionship it offers throughout its life.

Gamera is a particularly lovely representative of the American Dirus™ temperament.

She is gentle, sweet, affectionate, submissive, quiet, and calm. Her loving disposition and relaxed nature closely reflect the temperament established in our breed standard.

She does occasionally whine at the cat, but her overall temperament is peaceful, affectionate, and deeply devoted.

Dell is also a quiet dog, although he demonstrates somewhat greater energy and prey drive than we ideally seek in our finished American Dirus™ temperament.

Consequently, we anticipate that some Legend puppies may inherit Dell's increased energy or prey-drive tendencies, while others may more closely resemble Gamera's calm, gentle, submissive disposition.

We will carefully evaluate each puppy through our standardized temperament testing and extensive behavioral observations, beginning in early puppyhood.

These assessments help us identify inherited differences in emotional stability, confidence, human bondedness, energy, vocal tendencies, prey drive, and other behavioral characteristics.

Our goal is to identify puppies that most closely represent the American Dirus™ family companion standard while also recognizing the unique characteristics of every individual.

A true legend, after all, is remembered for character.

And character is precisely what we are breeding to preserve.

HEALTH AND GENETIC DIVERSITY

Dell and Gamera have undergone extensive genetic screening through Embark, allowing us to evaluate inherited health risks, physical traits, and genetic diversity before breeding.

Dell's genetic ancestry consists of approximately 43.9% German Shepherd Dog, 41.5% Alaskan Malamute, and 14.6% Labrador Retriever.

Gamera's genetic ancestry consists of approximately 48.8% Alaskan Malamute, 41.7% German Shepherd Dog, and 9.5% Irish Wolfhound.

These genetic contributions reflect the diverse ancestral foundations being used to develop the American Dirus™ breed.

Genetic Health

Both Dell and Gamera carry one copy of the ALT activity variant identified through Embark.

This variant influences normal baseline alanine aminotransferase (ALT) enzyme activity and is important when interpreting certain blood-test results. It does not indicate disease.

No additional genetic health risks were identified in the screening results provided for either parent.

Because both parents carry one copy of the ALT activity variant, the expected offspring inheritance is:

  • 25% inherit no copies.
  • 50% inherit one copy.
  • 25% inherit two copies.

Genetic Diversity

Dell has an Embark genomic coefficient of inbreeding (COI) of 19%, while Gamera has a genomic COI of 31%.

Their immune-region diversity results differ. Dell demonstrates low diversity at DLA-DRB1 and no diversity at DLA-DQA1/DQB1, while Gamera demonstrates high diversity at both regions.

These individual genetic measurements are evaluated alongside pedigree information when planning a breeding.

The proposed Legend litter has a calculated five-generation pedigree coefficient of inbreeding of approximately 2.93%.

The documented pedigree contains 62 ancestral positions representing 40 distinct ancestors, producing an ancestor loss coefficient of approximately 35.48% and an ancestor retention rate of 64.52%.

These figures describe the documented five-generation pedigree and are separate from the individual genomic COI results.

Our Strongbred™ breeding philosophy guides every decision: health first, temperament second, and appearance third.

We believe that the development of an extraordinary family companion begins with responsible genetic selection, careful health evaluation, and a lifelong commitment to the dogs we produce.

AN F3 GENERATION WITH A LEGACY

The Legend litter will carry the official F3 American Dirus™ generation designation.

At the Dire Wolf Project™, generation designations are calculated by identifying the lowest-generation parent and adding one generation. Because Dell is an F2 American Dirus™ and Gamera is an F4, their puppies will be designated F3.

This breeding brings together valuable genetic contributions from our established American Dirus™ families, including the Permafrost lineage through Dell and the established ancestry carried by Gamera.

We are especially interested in preserving Gamera's beautiful eye shape, giant stature, and gentle temperament, while evaluating the genetic and physical contributions Dell brings to the next generation.

Our goal is to continue developing the American Dirus™ as a magnificent family companion with the imposing appearance of an ancient dire wolf and the affectionate, dependable temperament of a devoted dog.

RESERVATIONS AND PLACEMENT

Legend puppies are expected to be priced between $5,200 and $7,500, depending on individual characteristics and placement considerations.

Select puppies may also be considered for participation in our Surrogate Breeder™ program.

Through this program, qualified families can help preserve valuable American Dirus™ genetics while providing a loving family home for a dog that may contribute to the future development of the breed.

Learn more about becoming a Surrogate Breeder™

Every generation of American Dirus™ dogs brings us closer to our vision, and every puppy represents another opportunity to preserve the qualities that make this breed extraordinary.

We cannot know all the adventures these puppies will experience, the families they will love, or the lives they may someday change.

But we know that somewhere, a family is waiting for a companion whose loyalty will become a cherished memory, whose devotion will inspire stories, and whose presence will leave a lasting legacy.

The Legend litter.

Their story is just beginning.
