Temperament Test #2

April 2, 2020

Note: All puppies were not affected in any way by a loud, sudden clanging sound. They did not flinch and hardly moved. They were awake and aware, but not traumatized or otherwise fearful of the sudden piercing sound. All puppies receive high scores on this section of the test.

Puppy #1 - Winter (green)

This puppy produced soft grunting, no movement, not elevated heartrate, no trauma during the pet. He was silent, totally relaxed, and completely stretching out all the way during the lift. It took puppy 15 seconds before grunting  noises, no movement, though. Moved around the basket and whined out, but only stayed along the bottom - no jumping or looking up. Moved in a circle when put back in the den, whined loudly as if lost. Found human foot and stopped all sound and sniffed then moved away quietly in circle back to pack and went to sleep.

This puppy recieves a score of 8.8 for this temperament test.

Puppy #2 - York (blue)

This puppy was quiet, no movement, no elevated heart rate, and not stiff during the pet. During the lift, he was quiet and very loose as he stretched completely out. Did not like the turn and took him 15 seconds of quiet thinking and then he screamed and flailed. He fought with strength and vigor. Upon turning back over, he was head shy, indicating his continued uneasiness. Handler waited until he was calm to begin next task. After 20 seconds he was no longer head shy and heart rate de-escalated. He was quiet in the basket for 30 seconds, looking around slowly. He looked all around, including up, but did not move his body - only his head. When placed back in the den, he closed his eyes where he was placed. 30 seconds later, he got up, pottied, began grunting and grunted around in a circle finding the corner and then his nose found his siblings. At that point, he fell asleep on the edge of the puppy pile.

This puppy recieves a score of 9.8 for this temperament test.

Puppy #3 - Mousse (brown)

During the pet, he moved his right front paw only slightly away as if he was going to move away, but then changed his mind. He gave one small head flinch just after this, but then made no noises or movement and was not in any way stiff. He grunted during the lift and his lower legs were bent up, not completely loose, but not stiff and no elevated heartrate. It took 5 seconds after the turn for him to produce traumatic type behaviors. He screamed and flailed about firecely, then his body relaxed at 20 mark, but he continued to cry out, just not as loudly. He was somewhat head shy upon being turned back over, but settled after one second. In the basket, he moved his body around in a circle looking every which way, grunting and crying. We placed back in the den, he moved immediately in the direction of the pack after a second of looking around. He seemed deliberate and aware.

This puppy recieves a score of 7.7 for this temperament test.

Puppy #4 - Candy

This puppy was quiet and still, not stiff in any way. She did not move backwards or forwards or try to get away during the pet. She was very relaxed, extremely loose and quiet during the lift. She moved her head around just slightly, completely calm and attentive. She was completely still and absolutely relaxed in her body, including her tail, which slowly relaxed down. She was also quiet during the entire turn. She was somewhat head shy when righted after the turn. She stiffened her head and laid it on the handler's chest, completely unmoving, as the handler pet her head. She was aware and alert, but extremely quiet and accepting - as if thinking. She eventually loosened up and then was no longer head shy. She was quiet in the basket, but moved her head around in a deliberate fashion. At one point she stood up from a down position and looked around from her central location, not moving around, just looking around. She looked up to the top of the basket and then moved in that direction, placing her nose at the adge of the basket, but not jumping up. She made no noise. She sniffed at the handler's feet upon return to the den, lingering with the handler for several seconds. Then, she quietly moved in a circle with some caution until she quietly and slowly returned herself to the pack.

This puppy recieves a score of 10 for this temperament test.

Puppy #5 - ButterScotch (yellow)

When being pet, this puppy was quiet and still with no movement. When lifted he was still and very loose without making any sounds. This puppy was also extremely loose and still during the turn, even uncurling his tail and laying still in my arms. When the handler turned him back over and brought him near to pet his head again, he only showed a very mild finch and then began licking the handler's shirt. In the basket, he was quiet, but moved around as if with purpose. He only had one small grunt in 30 in the basket. When he was placed back in the den, he was quiet and stayed still for several seconds before moving. He moved in the direction of the pack then peed. After this, he turned around in two cirles, crying out loudly in two burst, then quietly moved back until he found the pack. When he got back to his siblings, he gently played with Rocky Road (red) for a few minutes before heading back to sleep.

This puppy recieves a score of 10 for this temperament test.

Puppy #6 - Cherry (pink)

This puppy was quiet during the pet. She initially moved in a forward motion, but then stopped and stood still accepting the pet. She was loose and quiet during the lift without crying out or struggle whatsoever. Upon the turn, she immediately (before the handler counted the first second) screamed out and flailed about with vigor. She eventually stopped flailing, but continued to scream and moan. When righted, she immediately stopped her complaining. She did not show any head flinching or head shyness when touched at this point. When placed into the basket, she moved about the basket as if searching. She was quiet, other than a few grunts. When placed back in the den, she cried out vigorously as if wanting to alert mom of her plight. She moved about in circles and did not find her pack by 30 seconds. When the handler moved her pack with the puppies, she calmed down immediately from her loud cries and went back to sleep.

This puppy recieves a score of 7.7 for this temperament test.

Puppy #7 - Ice (orange)

This puppy was still and quiet when being pet. He was also loose and quiet and stretched his body out completely when lifted. It took him 10 seconds on the turn and then his heart rate increased with screaming and fierce struggling. When he finally submitted, he peed and wagged his tail in a very submissive stiff way. This puppy was very upset and traumatized by this part of the test. When he was turned back over, he immediately quieted down. Handler allowed him to recover before continuing the temperament testing. In the basket, he was quiet and still. He looked around quietly with his head and then began grunting quietly at the 30 second mark. When put back into the den away from the other puppies, he stayed quiet and still, as if thinking. He moved his head around with soft grunting and then traveled back to the pack to sleep.

This puppy recieves a score of 8.5 for this temperament test.

Puppy #8 - Rocky (red)

During the rough pet, this puppy moved his head slightly and yawned several times, but was quiet. During the lift, he was loose and quiet. However, when he was turned over on his back, he wailed and flailed. It took 5 seconds for him to decide, but once he did, he screamed and flailed about fiercely. Then, his body relaxed at the 20 second mark but continued to cry out, just not as loudly. He moved about the basket all around grunting. He was not still. At one point, he looked up and learn onto the sides at the corner, as if searching for a way to get out. This puppy appears to be extremely smart and aware - problem solver. When placed back, he sniffed the handler's sock for 15 seconds before going back toward the pack. He was silent when sniffing, but then began grunting slightly on his way back to the pack. He did go back in a straight line.

This puppy recieves a score of 8.3 for this temperament test.

Puppy #9 - Chip (gray)

This puppy was quiet during the rough pet. He did, however, move back and away from the pet initially. He stiffened his head somewhat initially as well. Then he relaxed and was quiet and accepting. This puppy was extremely quiet, loose, and relaxed at the lift. He was also extremely relaxed and loose when turned over on his back. He did not whine or cry out and did not struggle. Instead he allowed his legs and tail to dangle loosely. This puppy was a bit head shy when he was pet after the turn, close in to the handler's chest. In the basket, this puppy moved about in all directions until he came to the corner. At this point, he stood up on the basket's edges and looked over the edge with his front paws hanging onto the side. This is highly unusual behavior for our breed and indicates a willingness to go up onto objects and search his surroundings. He appears to be extremely smart and capable of problem-solving through difficult problems. When placed back into the den away from his siblings, he sniffed the handler's feet for a few seconds. At that point, he walked right over the handler's feet to move back to the pile of puppies. This is also highly unusual and goes with his willingness to jump up on the side of the basket. He does not appear to regard obstacles in his path as a challenge and simply goes through or over. He went straight back to the puppies. When he sniffed where they were, he deliberately turned around and went away from them to potty on the pee pad, indicating a strong desire to not soil his sleeping area. He then again headed correctly in the direction of the puppies and went back to sleep.

This puppy recieves a score of 9.3 for this temperament test.

Puppy #1 - Winter - First puppy is born from the 31 Flavors Litter (Triton/Shennara) at 3:35am PST. He is a large white male weighing 1 lb 5 oz. He whines some and moves around easily. There are already indications that he is highly aware and intelligent, knowing how to turn around and get back to mom when lost. He has long back legs and tail. Pink skin on face/nose that will turn black in a day or two. This puppy will have a snow nose in the winter like his father.

Puppy #2 - York - Second puppy born at 8:00am PST is another large white male weighing 1 lb 6 oz. He is very quiet and calm, doesn't complain about much, but also seems to be slightly less aware at this time. He has dark skin on his face

Puppy #3 - Mousse - Third puppy born at 9:25 am PST is a small silver wolf gray male weighing 1 lb 1 oz with a white stripe down his chest and belly as well as on all four paws, including all the way up the back of his front left leg. He is quiet and mellow at this time. He has already given me an opportunity to see his quick ability to know where warmth is and remember how to get back to it when moved away. Looks to be a smart pup here, but we shall see. He doesn't complain about anything and is quite determined to go where he wills.

Puppy #4 - Candy - The fourth puppy is a medium-sized white female weighing 1 lb 3 oz. She is quiet and long in body type. She is thinner in frame overall than her brothers. She has pink skin that will turn dark in the next few days, but she will show a snow nose in the winter.

Puppy #5 - Butterscotch - The fifth pup was born at 11:25am PST and is a medium-sized cream colored male with darker skin weighing in at 1 lb 3 oz. He is quiet and calm, thus far. He is on the thinner, longer side of life.

Puppy #6 - Cherry - Sixth puppy born at 4:25pm PST is a large light silver wolf gray female weighing 1 lb 6 oz. She has a white stripe down her chest and belly with a black nose and a small white tipped tail with a black mask and a large white front left leg. She has already demonstrated intelligence and some willful independence.

Puppy #7 - Ice - Seventh puppy born at 6:35pm PST is a small white male weighing 1 lb 1/2 oz.

Puppy #8 - Rocky - The eighth puppy born at 9:25pm PST is a silver wolf gray male with white paws weighing in at 1 lb 4 oz.
